Our philosophy

May we briefly introduce ourselves?
Judith, daughter of the Mayr family of innkeepers, who acquired this property in 1925, and Florian, son of the village bakery in Freienfeld, have decided to work on a new concept. Over several years, our idea matured to turn the three-star hotel, which was in need of renovation, into a top-class residence with 16 flats near Sterzing, far away from the hustle and bustle and noise. Our greatest wish was to create something new in our beautiful surroundings and to offer our guests something special. As a result, 'moidls lokäischn', a coffee shop with a small shop, was created on the ground floor of the house. We have managed to create a well-known and popular meeting place for breakfast and brunch lovers in South Tyrol and we continue to put our heart and soul into it.

We offer what we would like to experience ourselves on holiday. That's how we like our work and remain authentic.
Dimension: Our small residence, with 600 years of history, was very carefully renovated by us in 2017. We reduced the number of beds from 70 to 40. Thus we offer larger living space and more room for our guests. True to the motto: quality instead of quantity.
Sustainability: We do not want to consume unnecessary resources and pay attention to sustainability. We cover the majority of our electricity consumption with our own photovoltaic system. We heat with wood from local forests and source our raw materials and food from the local area.
Environment: Our guest card offers free use of all public transport throughout South Tyrol. It is valid from the day of arrival until the day of departure. We pay attention to careful waste separation and reduce plastic consumption with reusable packaging.
Entertainment: No entertainment, let us advise you and make our surroundings your entertainer. Quality time with your loved ones, for whom you often have too little time in everyday life.
Planning: No fixed times, no structured daily routines, no obligations. We give you our personal insider tips. You won't have to do anything, but you'll have a plethora of offers to choose from. Simply decide according to your mood.

Our guests are in the centre and we are there for you personally. We give you advice regarding leisure activities and are also there for you if you simply want to relax.
A lot of positive feedback and numerous regular guests confirm our concept, which has absolutely proven itself. We look forward to welcoming you to our hotel.

Historic guesthouse

In the 12th century, a medieval tower built by the lords of Trens stood where the historic Guesthouse Bircher stands today. The tower then had to make way for a manor house called Eppurg, which was first mentioned in a document in 1449. The mighty stone walls, the old vaults and wooden ceilings still bear witness to the wealth of the builders. The Eppurg has been run as an inn since 1829 and has been owned by the Mayr family since 1925.

2017 was a year of major changes for the Bircher family. The starting signal for the realisation of our heartfelt project was given and we set about implementing it. We wanted to take our family business to new shores. Relaxation and well-being as well as quality-conscious, regional gastronomy - that's how we imagine holidays at ‘der bircher’. Incidentally, the name Bircher is derived from the word birch, which is why birch wood plays an important role in the redesign. A holiday for our guests, just as we would want it for our family - that's how we imagined our concept. In the meantime, our concept has absolutely proven itself and has found favour with our guests.

Holidays in pleasant ambiance

The design requirements were high - the elegant and stylish holiday flats in the Bircher had to be both contemporary and cosy. The raw materials? Local and sustainable, and of course natural! So nature became the central element in the holiday flats. We were particularly fond of the birch tree, which also gave the flats their name. The fascinating look of the white trunks and the fine grain of the wood provided inspiration, and so this element can already be found in the entrance area. Arrive, put your feet up, relax and feel good.
